Artist Studio Space Application

The City of Santa Monica currently maintains approximately 17,600 square feet of artist day-studio space at the Santa Monica Airport. These studios can only be used by individual artists engaged in the production of any of the following art media: painting, drawing, sculpture, small scale glass works, ceramics, textiles, woodworking, photography, video art, printmaking, and other visual arts and handcrafts.  The spaces must serve as studios, workshops, and other uses primarily dedicated to the production of original works of visual art.

On occasion, these spaces become available and the Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Division and the Santa Monica Airport maintain a waiting list of qualified artists.  Eligibility of applicants is determined by the City of Santa Monica staff based on the list of criteria detailed below. Applicants are then placed on a list for review by the City of Santa Monica’s Airport Manager for final screening, including credit check and references.  The list is used as spaces become available.  Artists are added to the list as applications are received by the City on a first-come, first served basis beginning on October 30, 2008.

Criteria

Working Artists

Applicants must demonstrate a minimum of 2 years as a working artist indicated by provision of tax returns for the two most recent consecutive years and/or hold a degree in art from an accredited college or university.

Household Income

Prior to being considered for a lease, all artists on the waiting list will be subject to a means test based on their adjusted gross income.  Any artist earning more than 200% of the Housing and Urban Development median family income for Los Angeles County will be ineligible for a studio at the Santa Monica Airport

See chart below for financial eligibility requirements.

Santa Monica Residents

Preference will be given to artists currently maintaining a home or studio in the City of Santa Monica or who have lost Santa Monica studio space due to such things as increasing rents and redevelopment.

Lease Terms

Please note that studios are leased for a limited term of either five years (on a month-to-month basis) or for a five-year term with an option to renew for an additional sixteen months.  No lease may extend past June 30, 2015.

Artists will not be selected based on the context or quality of their work.
